Hawai'i Gas - Hawaii

First RNG facility in Hawaii

In 2018, Hawai’i Gas became the first in its state to capture and upgrade biogas from the Honouliuli Wastewater RNG facility using DMT’s two-stage Carborex®MS. Biogas from two anaerobic digesters is processed and upgraded to a purified RNG stream which is then injected into Hawai’i Gas O’ahu utility pipeline to provide thermal energy for homes and businesses. This project helps the City and County of Honolulu generate revenue on biogas that was previously flared.

$1.6 million in revenue per year for the island
3% total gas supply of Hawaii
97% methane recovery using 2-stage
98% plant uptime in the field

Honolulu's $5M award-winning biogas project

This $5 million project will generate approximately $1.6 million of annual revenue for the The City and County of Honolulu. It replaces synthetic natural gas (SNG) produced on the island and helps Hawaii’s vision for carbon neutrality by 2045.

In 2019, this project won ‘Biogas Project of the Year’ by the American Biogas Council for the use of DMT’s technology on municipal gas.

About the project

Hawai’i Gas became the first in its state to capture and upgrade biogas, using DMT’s membrane separation equipment, the Carborex®MS. In partnership with the City and County of Honolulu, the first-of-its-kind renewable natural gas (RNG) facility is equivalent to eliminating the need for 15,000 barrels of oil and reducing greenhouse gases by the amount produced by 400 cars annually.

Green Honouliuli Energy fueling 6.000 homes

The Honouliuli Wastewater RNG facility produces about 800,000 therms of energy per year, enough gas for 6,000 homes. Through DMT’s two-stage membrane separation technology, biogas from two anaerobic digesters is processed and upgraded to a purified RNG stream of up to 97%. The pipeline-spec RNG is then injected into Hawai’i Gas O’ahu utility pipeline to provide thermal energy for homes and businesses.

Project results

By selling the biogas to Hawai’i Gas, the City and County of Honolulu estimates they will generate approximately $1.6 million of revenue per year. This $5 million project harvests biogas that was previously flared off into the atmosphere.

DMT’s project was a critical piece to Hawaii’s resiliency plan for overcoming the island’s drastic weather patterns as well as reducing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions. The RNG is delivered safely and reliably through Hawai’i Gas 1,100-mile underground utility pipeline, meaning gas users can still cook and access hot water for sanitation when the power goes out.
