Unidad Mixta de Gas Natural Renovable - Spain
First RNG facility in Galicia
‘Unidad Mixta de Gas Natural Renovable’ is a biogas upgrading facility that is part of a public-private collaboration in Northwest Spain. The Edar Bens WWTP is Spain’s first biogas upgrading plant of its kind using DMT’s membrane system. As an award-winning project, the biomethane is currently used as vehicle fuel with plans to inject into the natural gas grid. The goal is demonstrate a circular economy recovering wasted energy from the wastewater treatment sector.
100K kilometres covered by bus on Bio-CNG
The goal of this private public partner- ship is to promote and demonstrate the advantages of biomethane production and use in Spain.
In 2020, this project won the Galicia Energy Award for its endeavours to promote the generation of biomethane. In 2021, it also won an Innovation Award by AVEBIOM & AEBIG.
This project has supplied public transportation in the region with biomethane, covering over 100.000 km and replacing conventional and polluting fossil fuels.
About the project
‘Unidad Mixta de Gas Natural Renovable’ is a biogas upgrading facility that is part of a public-private collaboration in Northwest Spain. Additionally, it is joint project between Naturgy, Energylab Technology Centre and Edar Bens SA, a supra-municipal public company that provides a waste water purification service in the municipalities of A Coruña, Arteixo, Cambre, Culleredo and Oleiros.
The facility is co-funded by the Galician Innovation Agency – Second Deputy President’s Office and Regional Ministry of Economy, Enterprise and Innovation, and by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the framework of the 2014-2020 ERDF Galicia operating programme. The project promotes and demonstrates the advantages of biomethane production in the urban and industrial wastewater treatment sector.
Edar Bens WWTP: Converting Biogas to Biomethane
The Edar Bens WWTP produces around 400 Nm3/h of biogas. Approximately 75% of this biogas production is destined for internal cogeneration (6,5 GWh/y). The collaboration was interested in converting the of 100 Nm3/h surplus of biogas into biomethane. The facility uses DMT’s Carborex®MS with a three-stage membrane configuration.
Project results
This facility is the first biogas upgrading installation of its type in Spain using membrane technology. The biomethane is used in vehicles and for injection into the natural gas grid. The goal is demonstrate a circular economy concept to recover wasted energy from the wastewater treatment sector. Additionally, the Bio-CNG supplies a regular line bus circulating in A Coruña, which has covered approximately 100.000 km, as well as three Edar Bens vans. Currently, these vans have driven 35.000 km on the biomethane produced.
In 2020, this project won the Galicia Energy Award for its endeavours to promote the generation of biomethane. In 2021, it also won an Innovation Award by AVEBIOM & AEBIG.
