Tønder Biogas Project Nears Completion – A Landmark in European Renewable Energy

The Tønder Biogas project in Denmark is entering its final phase, marking a significant milestone in Europe’s renewable energy landscape. Once fully operational, the facility will process approximately 930,000 tons of organic material annually, producing 40 million Nm³ of biomethane per year, equivalent to around 440 GWh of renewable energy and 48,000 tons of green CO₂. This makes it one of the largest biogas facilities in Europe.

The project has been headed by Lundsby Renewable Solutions A/S as lead designer and EPC contractor and at  the core of this ambitious project is the biogas upgrading plant supplied by DMT Environmental Technology. With its advanced CarboRex®MS system, DMT has delivered the technology to efficiently convert more than 10,000 Nm³/h of raw biogas into high-purity biomethane for injection into the Danish gas grid. By integrating membrane separation technology, the system ensures maximum methane recovery while minimizing CO₂ emissions, supporting Denmark’s commitment to sustainable energy production.

Tønder Biogas showcases the potential of large-scale biogas upgrading in driving Europe’s transition to renewable natural gas (RNG). By converting agricultural residues and other organic streams into biomethane, the facility contributes significantly to CO₂ reduction, energy security, and the decarbonization of the gas grid.

As the project nears completion, DMT takes pride in delivering the key technology that enables this large-scale renewable energy achievement, reinforcing its position as a leading biogas upgrading technology provider for major projects worldwide.
